PERKESO (SOCSO) explained: contributions, benefits, claims and what it does not cover
PERKESO, also called SOCSO, is Malaysia's social security body: your employer pays 1.75% and you pay 0.5% of wages up to RM6,000 a month, plus 0.2% each for EIS. In return you are covered for work and commuting injuries, invalidity or death from any cause before 60, and job loss. It does not pay private hospital bills for illness or a lump sum to clear your loans, which is where insurance fits in.
