Key takeaways
- Great Eastern panel hospitals are listed in its Panel Healthcare Providers Locator, filtered by state, area and distance; the network changes, so check it before a planned admission.
- In that locator, "Panel Clinic" means clinics for insurance check-ups on new applications, alterations and reinstatements, not outpatient treatment on your medical card.
- For cashless admission, show your Health Care Card or e-Medical Card and NRIC; a Great Eastern GL is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued.
- A GL is not available at a non-panel hospital or with a non-panel specialist, even inside a panel hospital: you pay the bill and claim reimbursement.
- You can download the Great Eastern e-Medical Card with your IC number and date of birth, and the HealthCare Services hotline 1300-1300-18 runs 24 hours, 7 days a week.
How do I find a Great Eastern panel hospital near me?
Great Eastern Life keeps its list in the Panel Healthcare Providers Locator. Choose the provider type, pick your state, type your area (for example Shah Alam, Puchong or Cheras) and set a distance. The same locator also covers clinics, pharmacies and physiotherapy centres, so pick the right type first:
| Type in the locator | Who it is for (Great Eastern's own note) |
|---|---|
| Panel Hospital | All Great Eastern Life policyholders with an eligible medical plan |
| The Great Journey Hospital | Policyholders whose medical plan covers hospitalisation; extra privileges at these selected panel hospitals |
| The Great Journey Clinic | Policyholders whose medical plan covers outpatient treatment (GP clinics) |
| Panel Clinic (for New Business & CS Alterations/Reinstatement) | Insurance check-ups for new applications, benefit changes and policy reinstatement |
| The Great Journey Pharmacy / Physiotherapy Centre | Selected pharmacies and independent physiotherapy centres in the network |
Three habits save trouble later:
- Check close to the date. The network is reviewed from time to time. For example, Great Eastern notes that Columbia Asia Hospital Petaling Jaya and Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar left The Great Journey Hospital network from 1 July 2026.
- Check the specialist too. Not every specialist in a panel hospital is a Great Eastern panel specialist, and a GL is not available for a non-panel specialist. The locator page links a Panel Specialist List.
- Call the hospital ahead for a planned admission or day surgery, and ask the admission counter to confirm they can request a Great Eastern GL.
In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital first. Treatment comes before paperwork, and a non-panel admission can still be claimed by reimbursement.
Panel clinic or The Great Journey clinic: where can I see a doctor on my medical card?
This is the question I am asked most after people search "Great Eastern panel clinic". The answer depends on what your plan covers, not on the clinic name.
- Panel Clinic in Great Eastern's locator is where you go for the insurance medical check-up when you apply, increase your cover or reinstate a lapsed policy.
- The Great Journey Clinic is a GP clinic for policyholders whose medical plan includes outpatient treatment, subject to the policy contract.
- Many individual medical cards are built around hospital stays. Specific outpatient items, such as accident outpatient treatment or outpatient kidney dialysis where your plan covers them, are usually claimed by reimbursement.
If your company gives you a Great Eastern group medical plan, that is a different setup: employees use the Great Eastern Corporate app for a digital medical card and its own clinic finder. Your personal policy and your employer's plan do not share one card.
| Your situation | Where to go | How it is paid |
|---|---|---|
| Applying, adding cover or reinstating a policy | Panel Clinic for check-ups | Arranged with your application |
| GP visit, plan includes outpatient cover | The Great Journey Clinic | As your plan sets out |
| GP visit, plan covers hospital stays only | Any clinic | You pay; not claimable under a hospital-only plan |
| Admitted to hospital | Panel hospital and panel specialist | Cashless with a GL, if approved |
Not sure which plan you hold? Your policy schedule or e-Connect shows it, and I can read it with you. The medical card guide explains the common plan types.
What happens at the admission counter, and how long does the GL take?
Great Eastern describes the cashless process on its Health Care Card and GL page. In order:
- At the panel hospital, show your Health Care Card (or e-Medical Card) and your NRIC at the admission counter.
- Your doctor fills in the admission section of the GL request form. The sooner it is done, the sooner Great Eastern can review it.
- The hospital sends the documents to Great Eastern's Healthcare Services. If the admission meets the policy terms, an Initial Guarantee Letter (IGL) goes to the hospital.
- You get an SMS on the GL status if your mobile number is registered with Great Eastern or written on the GL form.
- At discharge, the doctor completes the discharge section, the hospital prepares the bill, and Great Eastern issues the Final Guarantee Letter (FGL).
| Point | What Great Eastern states |
|---|---|
| GL validity | 30 days from the date of issue |
| Final GL at discharge | Processed within 75 minutes for straightforward cases; incomplete documents cause delays |
| Deposit | Most hospitals still ask for one; it is refunded after non-covered charges are deducted |
| Not covered by the GL | Co-insurance or deductible, telephone charges, extra meals, miscellaneous items, service tax, braces and special aids |
| The Great Journey Hospitals | Admission and registration fees waived; discharge before the Final GL with a deposit of about RM300 to RM500 |
For young children there is a shortcut: at The Great Journey Hospitals, life assured aged 12 and below with one of ten listed acute infections can be admitted through Kiddo Express without waiting for the GL.
Why would a Great Eastern GL be declined, and what do I do then?
If Great Eastern cannot approve the admission on the spot, it sends a Decline Guarantee Letter to the hospital. You then pay the bill and submit a claim for reimbursement, which is reviewed on its own merits. The reasons Great Eastern lists include:
- the policy has lapsed or ended;
- the treatment is outpatient, or pre- or post-hospitalisation care, which is claimed separately;
- the hospital or the specialist is not on the panel;
- there is not enough information yet to confirm the admission is covered;
- more checks are needed on exclusions or pre-existing conditions.
A declined GL is not the same as a rejected claim. Many declines happen because the hospital cannot yet show the diagnosis is covered, and the claim is decided later with the full medical report. Keep every bill, receipt and report. Also note that room discounts given to panel patients are not a policy right, so with a declined GL the hospital charges its published room rate.
If the reimbursement claim is later rejected and you disagree, ask for the reason in writing first. The guide to rejected claims and FMOS shows the next steps.
How do I get my Great Eastern e-Medical Card?
The e-Medical Card works like the plastic card at a panel hospital admission counter. Great Eastern's e-Medical Card guest login page explains how to get it without registering first:
- Open the e-Medical Card guest login (it runs on e-Connect).
- Enter your identification number and date of birth.
- After verification, view and download the card, and keep a copy on your phone.
If you already use e-Connect, the card is also under your policy services there. While you are logged in, check that your mobile number and email are current: that is where GL SMS updates and claim notices go. The Great Eastern policyholder guide covers e-Connect registration and premium payment.
Two limits to remember: the card identifies you as a Great Eastern medical policyholder, but it cannot be used as a guarantee for a hospital deposit, and it works only at Great Eastern panel hospitals in Malaysia. Overseas, you pay first and claim when you are back.
Not on the panel, or treated overseas? How reimbursement works
When there is no GL, you can still claim. Great Eastern lists these cases for reimbursement: a non-panel hospital or specialist, pre- and post-hospitalisation treatment, accident outpatient treatment, outpatient kidney dialysis, accident-related dental treatment, and any admission without a GL.
| Cashless (GL) | Reimbursement | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Great Eastern panel hospital, panel specialist | Any hospital, including overseas |
| Who pays the hospital | Great Eastern, for covered items | You, then you claim |
| What you send | Hospital handles the GL documents | Claim form, final hospital bills and original receipts, medical reports or test results |
| How long | Final GL within 75 minutes for straightforward cases | Usually 10 to 14 working days after a complete set of documents |
Claims can be submitted, and their status checked, through e-Connect. Great Eastern's guide to medical claims also lists the documents most often requested. The two delays I see most are a missing medical report and receipts that are copies instead of originals, so collect both before you leave the hospital.
Where I can help as your agent
I am a Great Eastern Life Planning Advisor in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, and this is an independent guide, not Great Eastern's website. For policyholders I look after, I help with:
- checking before a planned admission which plan you hold, whether the hospital and specialist are on the panel, and what the GL may not cover;
- following up a slow or declined GL with Great Eastern while you focus on the patient;
- preparing a reimbursement claim so the first submission is complete.
If your Great Eastern agent has left or no longer replies, you are not stuck: your policy stays in force, and you can ask for a new servicing agent. I also do a free policy review for policies from any insurer, with no need to buy anything. WhatsApp me and I usually reply the same day.
