JPJ tinted spec 2026: how dark can your car windows legally be in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, JPJ allows a minimum of 70% VLT on the front windscreen and 50% on the front side windows, while the rear side windows and rear windscreen of a private car can be fully dark if it has side mirrors on both sides. Darker front windows need a JPJ permit (RM5,000 for two years), and each window over the limit can draw its own summons.

Key takeaways

  • Front windscreen: at least 70% VLT; front side windows: at least 50% VLT, under the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991 as amended in 2019.
  • Rear side windows and the rear windscreen of a private car have no VLT limit, as long as the car has side mirrors on both sides.
  • A JPJ permit for darker tint costs RM5,000 and lasts two years; you apply on health, security or another specific ground.
  • On conviction the fine is up to RM2,000 or six months' jail for a first offence, but JPJ issues a compound first and the minister said in 2023 nobody would be jailed for tint.
  • Each window over the limit is a separate offence, and the registered owner can be summoned even when someone else is driving.
  • Tint does not affect your NCD, but declare accessories if your renewal form asks, and check whether your windscreen cover pays for film.

What is the JPJ tinted spec for cars in 2026?

The rules come from the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991, as amended in 2019. JPJ repeated the limits in October 2023 (Bernama report in the NST), and I could find no newer change announced for 2026. The limit is set as VLT, visible light transmission: the share of light that passes through the window. A higher number means lighter glass.

WindowMinimum VLTWhat it means in practice
Front windscreen70%Only a light film; most dark films fail
Front side windows (driver and front passenger)50%A medium film is possible, measured on the finished window
Rear side windowsNo limitCan be fully dark on a private car
Rear windscreenNo limitCan be fully dark if the car has side mirrors on both sides

According to Utusan Malaysia (September 2023), the freedom at the back applies to private vehicles, and the rear windows may be fully dark only when the car has a mirror on both the left and the right side. A very dark rear screen blocks your view through the interior mirror, which is why the side mirrors matter.

How dark is 70% or 50% VLT, and how do I stay within it?

Window film is sold by its own VLT figure, but a car window is glass plus film. What an officer checks at a roadblock is the window as it sits on your car, so the safe way is to judge the finished result, not the number on the film's box.

  • Ask the installer to measure the front windscreen and front side windows with a VLT meter after fitting, in front of you.
  • Keep the invoice showing the film used for each window. It helps if you later sell the car or change installers.
  • Heat rejection is not darkness. Many lighter films still cut heat well, so a legal windscreen does not mean a hot car.
  • Old film darkens and bubbles. If you bought a used car, have the front windows measured before you drive it daily.

In my experience, the questions people bring me come up after a roadblock or at renewal time. Spending ten minutes on a VLT reading when the film goes on is much cheaper than a summons later.

Can I tint darker than the limit? The JPJ permit

Yes, with JPJ's approval. Utusan Malaysia reported these terms in September 2023, and the October 2023 JPJ statement added that you can apply by post or through the JPJ portal at jpj.gov.my.

What is the fine for illegal tint in Malaysia?

The law sets court penalties, but in practice JPJ issues a compound first.

StageWhat can happen
Stopped with tint over the limitA notice or compound from JPJ
Compound not paidThe case can go to court
Convicted, first offenceFine up to RM2,000 or jail up to six months
Convicted, later offenceFine up to RM4,000 or jail up to 12 months, or both

Transport Minister Anthony Loke told Parliament in November 2023 that the government would not jail owners over tint: offenders get a compound first, and only an unpaid compound goes to court (Paul Tan report citing Harian Metro). Two more points catch people out. JPJ Terengganu said in 2019 that each window over the limit is a separate offence, so a dark windscreen and two dark front windows mean three summonses, and that the registered owner is also summoned when someone else is driving (Paul Tan report citing Harian Metro).

Does window tint affect my car insurance or NCD?

Tint does not change your No Claim Discount: NCD only moves with claims and claim-free years. Where tint does matter is the paperwork and the windscreen.

  • Answer the proposal and renewal form truthfully. If your insurer asks about modifications or accessories, list what is on the car. A wrong answer can cause trouble at claim time.
  • Windscreen claims and film. If you have windscreen cover and the glass is replaced, the old film goes with it. Whether the new film is paid for depends on your policy wording, so ask before the workshop starts.
  • Keep the film receipts. If your windscreen claim does include film, the insurer will want to see what was fitted.

You can check your current NCD for free before your renewal so there are no surprises.

Checklist before you tint your car

  1. Decide which windows you want dark. The back can be fully dark on a private car with side mirrors on both sides.
  2. Choose a film for the front windscreen and front side windows that still reads 70% and 50% once it is on the glass.
  3. Ask for a VLT meter reading of each front window after fitting, and keep the invoice that lists the film per window.
  4. If you need darker front windows for health or security, apply for the JPJ permit first and wait for approval.
  5. Tell your insurer or agent about the film if your renewal form asks about accessories, and ask how a future windscreen claim would treat it.

Questions people ask

What is the legal tint percentage in Malaysia?

The front windscreen must let through at least 70% of visible light and the front side windows at least 50%. The rear side windows and rear windscreen of a private car have no limit, provided the car has side mirrors on both sides.

Can I fully tint my rear windows in Malaysia?

Yes, on a private car. Since the 2019 amendment there is no VLT limit for the rear side windows and the rear windscreen, but the car must have side mirrors on both the left and right.

Is 50% tint allowed on the front windscreen?

No. The front windscreen needs at least 70% VLT. The 50% figure applies only to the front side windows next to the driver and front passenger.

How much is the JPJ permit for darker tint?

Utusan Malaysia reported a fee of RM5,000 for a two-year permit, granted on health, security or other specific grounds. You apply by post or through the JPJ portal and must follow the normal limits until it is approved.

What is the fine for tinted windows in Malaysia?

JPJ issues a compound first. If it is not paid, the case can go to court, where a first conviction carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or up to six months' jail. The minister said in 2023 that no one would be jailed for tint.

Will I get one summons or several for dark windows?

Possibly several. JPJ has said each window over the limit is a separate offence, so a dark windscreen and two dark front side windows can mean three summonses, and the registered owner can be summoned too if someone else was driving.

Does window tint affect my car insurance NCD?

No. NCD depends only on claims and claim-free years. Do list the film if your renewal form asks about accessories, and ask whether your windscreen cover pays for new film if the glass is ever replaced.
