Flood insurance claims in Malaysia: car, house and shop

Flood damage is only covered if your policy includes it: cars need the special perils add-on, while houses, shops and factories need flood in their policy. Check before the monsoon, and if a flood hits, take photos, don’t start a flooded car, and tell your insurer immediately.

Add flood cover before a flood happens; it can’t be added afterwards. Landslip and subsidence are usually separate.

If your car is flooded

  1. Don’t start the engine. Starting a flooded engine can cause more damage and get the claim reduced or rejected.
  2. Take photos and videos showing the water level and the car.
  3. Call your insurer’s hotline and have the car towed to a panel workshop.
  4. Make a police report if your policy requires it, and keep all receipts.

A flood claim under special perils may affect your NCD depending on the insurer; ask before you claim.

If your house, shop or factory is flooded

  1. Make sure everyone is safe and switch off the electricity at the main switch if it’s safe to do so.
  2. Photograph and video all damage before cleaning up.
  3. Tell your agent or insurer immediately. A loss adjuster may be appointed; don’t throw away damaged items until they have seen them.
  4. List damaged contents or stock with estimated values, brands and models.
  5. Prepare documents: claim form, proof of ownership, photos, repair quotations and the inventory list.

Building claims can include cleaning, repainting and electrical repairs. Shops and factories with business interruption cover can also claim lost profit while they reopen.

Before the next monsoon

  • Check your car policy schedule for special perils, and your home and shop policies for flood.
  • Make sure sums insured reflect today’s rebuilding cost and stock value, to avoid the average clause.
  • Keep receipts and photos of valuable items and stock records somewhere safe, such as cloud storage.

Questions people ask

Does car insurance cover flood in Malaysia?

Only if your comprehensive policy has the special perils extension. Check the additional coverage section of your policy schedule.

Does house insurance cover flood?

A basic fire policy doesn’t. Many houseowner and householder policies include flood, but check the perils listed in your own policy.

Can I add flood cover after my house floods?

No. Flood cover must be in place before the flood happens.

Should I start my car after it was flooded?

No. Starting a flooded engine can cause more damage and may lead to a reduced or rejected claim. Have it towed instead.

Will fire insurance pay if my factory floods?

Only if flood was added to the fire policy as an extension. Many factory owners only find out after a flood.
