Get a car insurance quotation and renew roadtax: how it works
- WhatsApp your details. Plate number, the owner’s IC number, postcode, and a photo of the car grant (VOC) if it’s your first renewal with Lulu.
- Get your quote. Lulu checks your NCD (No Claim Discount), the sum insured and the add-ons you had last year, then sends the premium and roadtax amount.
- Pay and confirm. Once payment is made, the insurance is issued.
- Roadtax is renewed. With valid insurance in place, your roadtax is renewed and you receive the digital roadtax (e-LKM). You can check it in the MyJPJ app.
Most renewals are done the same day. If your roadtax or insurance has already expired, tell Lulu straight away: an expired policy means you are driving uninsured, and you cannot renew roadtax until new insurance is in force.

What decides your car insurance premium
Car insurance premiums in Malaysia are set by the insurer based on several things. Knowing them helps you understand why two quotes can differ.
- Sum insured: the amount your car is covered for. It should be close to the car’s current market value.
- NCD: your No Claim Discount grows for each claim-free year and can make a big difference to the premium. A claim can reduce it at the next renewal.
- Car model, engine capacity and age: repair costs and risk differ by model.
- Where the car is used and kept: your postcode is part of the pricing.
- Add-ons: windscreen, flood and natural disaster cover, and named drivers all add to the premium.
Lulu doesn’t promise the cheapest price. She makes sure the cover actually fits your car, so you aren’t underinsured when you need to claim.
Market value or agreed value?
Many policies offer two ways to set the sum insured:
| Market value | Agreed value | |
|---|---|---|
| Payout on total loss | The car’s market value at the time of loss | The amount agreed when the policy started |
| Suits | Older cars, or owners who want a lower premium | Newer cars, or owners who want certainty on a total loss |
| Watch out for | Under-insurance if the sum insured is set too low | Availability depends on the insurer and the car |
Lulu explains which option is available for your car before you pay.
Add-ons worth asking about
- Windscreen cover: windscreen repair or replacement, usually without affecting your NCD.
- Flood and natural disaster (special perils): worth considering in flood-prone parts of the Klang Valley.
- Additional drivers: make sure everyone who regularly drives the car is covered.
- Strike, riot and civil commotion, and legal liability of passengers.
Exact add-ons and terms depend on the insurer and policy. Lulu lists what you had last year so nothing drops off by accident.
Private cars, e-hailing cars and lorries
Lulu handles roadtax and insurance renewal for:
- Private cars, the most common renewal.
- E-hailing cars: if you drive for Grab or another e-hailing platform, a normal private car policy is not enough. See e-hailing insurance.
- Lorries and goods vehicles for businesses. See lorry insurance.
Motorcycles are not covered by this service.
