What travel insurance covers
- Overseas medical expenses and emergency evacuation: the most important part. A hospital stay abroad can be very expensive, and many Malaysian medical cards only cover emergencies overseas for a limited period.
- Trip cancellation and curtailment if you or a family member falls ill, or for other listed reasons.
- Flight delay and missed connections, with payouts per set number of hours delayed.
- Baggage and personal belongings lost, damaged or delayed.
- Personal accident and personal liability while travelling.
Single trip, annual or domestic?
| Plan | Suits |
|---|---|
| Single trip | One or two holidays a year |
| Annual multi-trip | Frequent travellers and business trips, each trip within a maximum length |
| Domestic | Trips within Malaysia, such as Sabah, Sarawak or Langkawi |
| Family plan | Parents and children travelling together |
Choose a plan whose area of cover matches your destination; Asia-only plans may not cover other regions.
Common exclusions to check
- Pre-existing medical conditions, unless the plan specifically covers them
- High-risk activities such as scuba diving beyond a set depth or skiing, unless added
- Travelling against government travel advice
- Claims related to alcohol or drugs
- Unattended baggage, and valuables above per-item limits
Claims tips
- Save the insurer’s 24-hour emergency number before you leave.
- For hospital admission overseas, call the emergency line first so it can arrange direct payment where possible.
- Keep every receipt, medical report, airline delay letter and police report for theft.
