Who this is for
- Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) participants and applicants
- Expat employees and their families whose company cover is limited or ends when they leave the job
- Foreign spouses of Malaysians
- Retirees who have settled in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor or nearby
MM2H insurance requirements
The MM2H programme has included a requirement for valid medical insurance from a Malaysian insurer, and the rules, age limits and exemptions have changed over the years. Before you buy, check the current MM2H requirements with the official programme or your MM2H agent.
Once you know what’s required, Lulu helps you find a plan that meets it and covers you properly in real life.
Local plan or international plan?
| Malaysian medical plan | International health plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you are covered | Mainly Malaysia | Several countries, depending on the plan |
| Cost | Generally lower | Generally higher |
| Cashless admission | At the insurer’s Malaysian panel hospitals | Varies by provider |
| Counts toward local requirements | Usually issued by a Malaysian insurer | May not satisfy requirements that ask for a local insurer |
Some expats keep an international plan for travel and a local plan for everyday hospital cover. Lulu can explain the local options.
What affects eligibility
- Age: plans have maximum entry ages, which matters for retirees.
- Health history: pre-existing conditions are generally excluded, and some applicants need a medical check.
- Residency documents: insurers ask for your passport and visa or pass details.
Estate planning for foreigners
If you own property or have bank accounts in Malaysia, consider a Malaysian will for those assets, so your family isn’t caught up in a long administration process across two countries.
