Commercial vehicle insurance, explained
Lorries are insured under commercial vehicle policies, not private car policies. The cover is priced around how the vehicle is used: what it carries, its weight class, and whether it runs for your own business or carries goods for others.
As with private cars, there are usually three levels of cover:
| Cover | What it protects |
|---|---|
| Comprehensive | Damage to your lorry, fire and theft, plus your liability to third parties |
| Third party, fire and theft | Third-party liability, plus fire and theft of your lorry |
| Third party only | Your legal liability to others: injury, death or damage to their property |

Before the roadtax can be renewed
Goods vehicles have a few more checks than private cars. Before renewal, make sure:
- the insurance is valid for the vehicle’s commercial use,
- the PUSPAKOM inspection required for commercial vehicles is up to date,
- any operating licence or permit your business needs for the vehicle is in order.
Lulu handles the insurance and roadtax and will remind you what to check, so the lorry isn’t stuck off the road because one document lapsed.
Cover that businesses often miss
- The goods you carry. A motor policy covers the vehicle and third-party liability, not the cargo. Goods in transit need separate cover.
- Your drivers. Check that every driver is allowed under the policy and holds the right licence.
- Your premises. If the lorry is part of a shop or factory business, the building, stock and machinery need fire insurance too.
What to send Lulu
- Plate number and a photo of the vehicle grant (VOC)
- Company registration (SSM) details if the lorry is under a company
- What the lorry carries and where it usually operates
- Current insurance and roadtax expiry dates
If you run several vehicles, send the list and Lulu will line up the renewal dates so they’re easier to manage.
