How road tax is calculated in Malaysia
JPJ sets road tax (Lesen Kenderaan Motor, LKM) by vehicle type, ownership, where the car is registered and engine size. For an individually owned private saloon car in Peninsular Malaysia, the yearly rates are:
| Engine capacity | Yearly road tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000 cc | RM20 |
| 1,001 – 1,200 cc | RM55 |
| 1,201 – 1,400 cc | RM70 |
| 1,401 – 1,600 cc | RM90 |
| 1,601 – 1,800 cc | RM200 + RM0.40 for every cc above 1,600 |
| 1,801 – 2,000 cc | RM280 + RM0.50 for every cc above 1,800 |
| 2,001 – 2,500 cc | RM380 + RM1.00 for every cc above 2,000 |
| 2,501 – 3,000 cc | RM880 + RM2.50 for every cc above 2,500 |
| Above 3,000 cc | RM2,130 + RM4.50 for every cc above 3,000 |
Example: a 1,800 cc car pays RM200 + (200 × RM0.40) = RM280 a year; a 2,000 cc car pays RM380.

Electric car (EV) road tax from 2026
From 1 January 2026, electric cars pay road tax based on motor power in kilowatts (kW). For an individually owned electric saloon:
| Motor power | Yearly road tax |
|---|---|
| Up to 50 kW | RM20 |
| 50 – 60 kW | RM44 |
| 60 – 70 kW | RM56 |
| 70 – 80 kW | RM72 |
| 80 – 90 kW | RM160 + RM6.40 per kW above 80 |
| 90 – 100 kW | RM224 + RM5.00 per kW above 90 |
| 100 – 125 kW | RM274 + RM10.00 per kW above 100 |
| 125 – 150 kW | RM524 + RM20.00 per kW above 125 |
| Above 150 kW | RM1,024 + RM27.00 per kW above 150 |
JPJ uses the motor output recorded for licensing, which may differ from the “peak power” in a car brochure.
When the calculator doesn’t apply
- SUVs and MPVs registered as non-saloon private vehicles use a different table.
- Company-owned cars pay higher rates than individually owned cars.
- Lorries, vans and other commercial vehicles are rated by weight. See lorry insurance and road tax.
- Langkawi, Labuan and Tioman have their own rates.
For any of these, WhatsApp Lulu your plate number and she will give you the exact figure with your renewal quote.
Before you renew
- Your car insurance must be valid for the whole road tax period. Renew the insurance first.
- JPJ lets you renew road tax only when it expires within two months.
- If the road tax has been expired for more than three years, the car must pass a PUSPAKOM inspection first.
- Private cars of Malaysian owners now use digital road tax in the MyJPJ app.
